# DNS Setup

In order for your Lightpost website hosting to work properly, you'll need to create a \`CNAME\` DNS record with your domain registrar to point to the Lightpost website hosting server.

This record should look like:

<table><thead><tr><th width="122">Type</th><th width="88">Name</th><th width="398">Content</th><th>TTL</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>CNAME</td><td>@</td><td>host.lightpost.website</td><td>60m</td></tr><tr><td>CNAME</td><td>www</td><td>host.lightpost.website</td><td>60m</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="info" %}
Some registrars use your **domain name instead of the @ symbol** in the "Name" field. In this case, just enter your domain name instead of the @ symbol.
{% endhint %}

This will mean that your congregation's website domain name (such as [katychurchofchrist.com](https://katychurchofchrist.com)) will work correctly.

Lightpost will also automatically forward the root domain of your domain to the `www` variant.  For example:&#x20;

> `example.com` will **forward** to `www.example.com`

### CNAME Flattening Support

Some registrars do not support a root level CNAME record (also known as CNAME flattening, or ALIAS/ANAME records in some DNS systems).

If this is the case, you'll need to do one of two options:

#### Forwarding (Recommended)

Some registrars support domain forwarding, which is recommended if adding a CNAME at the rool level is not available.

Depending on your registrar, you'll just want to setup your root level address to forward to `www`.

For example:

> `example.com` should forward to `www.example.com`

#### A Record (Not Recommended)

&#x20;You can also use a standard `A Record` for the root level record to support Lightpost Website hosting. The record will look like this:

<table><thead><tr><th width="122">Type</th><th width="88">Name</th><th width="398">Content</th><th>TTL</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>A</td><td>@</td><td>45.33.116.238</td><td>60m</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="warning" %}
This IP address is **subject to change** in the future and will need to be updated to keep your website working correctly.
{% endhint %}
