# Groups in the Directory

Let members see which groups a person or family belongs to while browsing the directory, for the groups you choose.

Members often want to know who serves as a deacon, or which care group a family is in, without leaving the directory. You choose which groups appear there and which roles can see them.

Nothing is shown until you do both of these:

1. [Mark the groups](#marking-a-group) you want to show.
2. [Give a role permission](#choosing-who-can-see-them) to see them.

### Marking a Group

1. In the Admin, go to **Groups** and select a group.
2. Open **Settings** and find **Show in the Directory**.
3. Turn on one or both options. Each one saves as soon as you switch it:
   * **Show on individuals in the directory** — the group is listed on each person who belongs to it. This suits groups such as Deacons or Song Leaders.
   * **Show on family units in the directory** — the group is listed on a family when anyone in that family belongs to it. This suits groups such as care groups or zones.

Groups you don't mark are never shown in the directory.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Marking a group shows its name on its members to everyone with the permission below, **even when the group is private**.
{% endhint %}

### Choosing Who Can See Them

1. In the Admin, go to **Roles** and open a role.
2. Choose **Member Permissions**.
3. Under **Directory**, check **View Groups in the Directory**.

Your existing roles do not have this permission until you check it. Admin permissions for users and groups do not include it either: an administrator sees groups in the directory only when one of their roles has this permission.

See [Roles](/core-concepts/roles.md) for more on permissions.

### What Members See

Members whose role has the permission see a **Groups** section in two places:

<table><thead><tr><th width="220">Where</th><th>What is listed</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>A family's page</strong></td><td>Groups marked for family units that anyone listed in the family belongs to</td></tr><tr><td><strong>A person's details</strong></td><td>Groups marked for individuals that the person belongs to</td></tr></tbody></table>

* **Web app** — the family page shows a **Groups** card below **Family Members**. Select a family member to open their details, which include their own **Groups**.
* **Mobile app** — **Groups** appears on the family screen below **Family Members**, and on a person's screen below **Personal Info**. This requires **mobile app version 10.1.4 or later**.

The section is hidden when there is nothing to show. A group marked for both individuals and family units appears in both places.

Only the group's name is shown. Members can't open the group or see its other members from the directory.

### Good to Know

* Only the family members listed on a family's directory page count. A group that only an unlisted relative belongs to, such as a non-member or someone who has passed away, is not shown.
* A child who belongs to a group marked for family units puts that group on the whole family.
* When you remove someone from a group or turn an option off, the group stops showing the next time the directory is loaded.
* The Directory feature must be enabled for your account.
